How Downfalls taught me good lessons

Ogilvy Media, Neo@Ogilvy and RedWorks Pvt Ltd Managing Director Lalith Sumanasiri in a recent interview said, “once we train our minds in innovative thinking, we would automatically come up with innovative ideas.”

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: You always come up with the best solution for the client, even better than what they proposed. What is the secret behind it?
It’s all about attitude. You need to have that higher mindset that, “I can do something better than what I have been required to do. Once Steve Jobs said that people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world: are the ones who would indeed change the world!
I’m working in the advertising sector. This is an industry that is revolutionary, daily coming up with new ideas and inventions. Creativity is a key fact to be sustainable in this field. We need to come up with new ideas.
When we make “new year” plans each year, we present our clients with better and evolved strategies for the upcoming year. There are lots of new opportunities out there in the world. The only problem is that we rarely capture them. But once we train our minds to innovative thinking, we automatically would come up with innovative ideas.

Q: How did you overcome the barriers you had to face in your entrepreneurship journey?
The downfalls I suffered in life turned out to be life learning lessons. Those downfalls taught me much more than what I learned inside a classroom. A university education would give students’ knowledge, but experience cannot be taught in a classroom. The most interesting moments of life is to face challenges. First you need to be brave enough to take risks.
In all the challenges and downfalls I faced, I made sure to keep my head strong and vision clear. When you are doing something new, both, successes and failures are probable. People who try to do novel things would eventually succeed, after multiple failed attempts. bmd
